Planaria are triangular-head shaped parasites reddish in coloration:

Hydra are predatory creatures that mainly feed on daphnia and copepods, but are capable of stinging and killing shrimplets:

Both can be treated using 0.1g per 10 gallons of Fenbendazole, provided to be shrimp tank safe. Any generic dewormer for dogs/cats/horses is fine, read the ingredients list, Safeguard and Panacur being the brand names.

For a easy apportionment just get the 1 gram packet here and divide it into 10 portions.

Two to three doses should rid of most of the planaria and hydra in your tank. Dose 0.1g per 10 gallons every 2 days until no planaria are visible in the tank, then do a 50% water change.

Some other important pieces of info
  • Take out any activated carbon or purigen before dosing dewormer
  • Dewormer powder is very hard to dissolve. I would advising microwaving some tank water with the powder in it, stiring, letting the mixture cool, and then adding it to the tank.
  • Overdosing fen/the dewormer seems to have NO ill effects on shrimp (I've had shrimp eat the undissolved pieces with no problems)
  • Dosing the dewormer WILL kill nerites/brigg snails, and MAY kill pest snails (MTS, pond, ramshorns, etc).
Fish Shrimp tanks are like cups of coffee, one is never enough.
